When hearing about a psychiatric label for the first time, it is important for therapists and laypeople to try to discover the following:

* who decided to call it a mental illness?
* how it is defined?
* what information supports the claims that the entity (a) exists, (b) is consistent with some reasonable definition of "mental illness," and (c) the use of the label is helpful more than harmful?

The created category of PAS is extremely problematic with respect to all three criteria mentioned at the beginning of this chapter, that is, with who decided to call it a mental illness, with how it is defined, and with the nature of the information available in regard to whether the entity exists, whether it is consistent with some reasonable definition of "mental illness," and whether the use of the label is helpful and not harmful.
